           Congratulations to the writers of Coronation Street. Who knew it was possible

              to reach quite so many new lows? I watch the programme purely out of nostalgia, 

              and am loath to give up on it. But if I were to come across it now for the first time, 

              I'd switch off in minutes. Whatever happened to gentle comedy, great characterisation 

              and, dare I say it, the art of scriptwriting?
